Southern Oregon Sound and Northern Gateway Chorus joined together in Shady Cove, Oregon at the Edgewater Inn for our annual retreat.  We were excited to have Lori Lyford, the Master Director of Scottsdale Chorus coach us for the weekend.  Scottsdale Chorus is the 2016 International Champion Chorus after winning the Sweet Adelines International Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.  This is their fifth International gold medal while under the direction of Lori Lyford.   It was an awesome time for us all, we learned so much!

Southern Oregon Sound traveled down to Redding, CA to join our sisters in song, Northern Gateway Chorus for a day of coaching with Jan and Dana Gervais.  Jan is a retired Master Director and an Expression Judge.  Her daughter, Dana, is experienced in the Showmanship area.  Jan and Dana worked with us in these areas and also on our singing techniques.  It was a great day for us all!

Christmas was a truly joyous season for me this year.   I have always loved the beautiful music written for this season.  Yes, a Christmas Show is nice but I feel that something is missing when I don’t have a chance to go Christmas Caroling.  This year Southern Oregon Sound had its Annual Show for our Friends and Family and we also took the show on the road for 2 Saturdays to sing at local residence homes.  Since our membership spans the whole Rogue Valley, we shared our show, “Letters to Santa Claus”, with residence homes across the valley from Ashland to Medford and Eagle Point.

Our chorus invites Christmas singers to join us for 6 weeks to learn Christmas music and experience singing acapella music, many for the first time.  When our Christmas season rolls around they join us in our performances.   This year four women joined us along with three young women.  Our president, Frankie’s children, Emily, aged 14 and Jessica aged 8 sang with us for their second Christmas Season and also helped read letters to Santa.   In addition to Emily and Jessica, Memory and her daughter Cassie also sang and read with us as well as Sandy Engelmann, Tamara Fielding and Marcie Laudani.  Sandy Engelmann, and Tamara Fielding enjoyed singing “barbershop style” and will continue to enrich our Tenor Section as new and enthusiastic members of SOS.
