Christmas was a truly joyous season for me this year. I have always loved the beautiful music written for this season. Yes, a Christmas Show is nice but I feel that something is missing when I don’t have a chance to go Christmas Caroling. This year Southern Oregon Sound had its Annual Show for our Friends and Family and we also took the show on the road for 2 Saturdays to sing at local residence homes. Since our membership spans the whole Rogue Valley, we shared our show, “Letters to Santa Claus”, with residence homes across the valley from Ashland to Medford and Eagle Point.
These folks are my favorite audience of all. It is clear from the faces we see and the comments we receive that this music evokes memories from many years past. People sing along with the chorus and join in to sing the final “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.
There are always former Sweet Adelines who tell us about their experiences when they were performers too. This year one audience member clearly knew many of the arrangements. Martha invited her to sing with us and she joined our front row for several songs.
Our show was enriched by Linda Addington and her brother Dale who lugged their full sized harps to each show. Linda is a member who contributes many skills to our ensemble, as well as her voice. Linda and Dale played carols while we were setting up riser boxes and getting our show ready to perform. Linda played melodies while her brother harmonized. The beautiful, simple harp melodies were a graceful way to set the mood for our show.
